“No to Gender and Age Discrimination in PAL” press conference

Ambassador Rosario Manalo (third from left) emphasizes that the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) entered into by the Philippine Airlines (PAL) and the Flight Attendants’ and Stewards’ Association of the Philippines (FASAP) is invalid in the January 21 press conference entitled “No To Age and Gender Discrimination in PAL!” Manalo said the CBA violates provisions stated in the Convention on All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the Philippine Constitution. Others in photo are: (from left) Transformative Justice Institute Executive Director Atty. Adoracion Cruz-Avisado, Akbayan Party National Spokesperson Risa Hontiveros, and Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) Chairperson Remedios “Remmy” Rikken.
PCW Chairperson Remedios “Remmy” Rikken stresses the that the gender issue in PAL is that women retire poorer than men as a result of unequal work and retirement benefits Rikken says PAL should start making work opportunities equal to both women and men. She also commends the DOLE decision to set the compulsory retirement age for both male and female FASAP members at sixty (60) years old instead of 55 for female and 60 for male. FASAP President Bob Anduiza (left) and Spokesperson Louise Navarro (right) share how the decision of PAL management to retire eight (8) female flight attendants who turned 55 on 2010 violated the DOLE order for a “cease fire.” Anduiza says FASAP will continue pushing for equal work opportunities in PAL which is the country’s flag carrier. Akbayan National Spokesperon Risa Hontiveros asks business tycoon and PAL owner Lucio Tan to abide by the DOLE decision issued last December 23, 2010 which corrects age and gender discrimination. Hontiveros says Akbayan Party List supports Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz on her historic decision.
