RH supporters in Mendiola: “P-Noy, Salamat P-Noy!”
August 19, 2011, Mendiola, Manila – Reproductive Health (RH) Bill advocates, led by the Purple Ribbon Movement for RH, assembled at the Chino Roces Bridge in Mendiola to show their appreciation and support to President Aquino as the RH Bill joins the lineup of priority measures in LEDAC.
Gracing the event were former Akbayan Partylist representative Risa Hontiveros, Commission on Human Rights Commissioner Ma Victoria Cardona, and Philippine Commission on Women Executive Director Emmeline Verzosa.
Verzosa said that since the 12th Congress, women’s groups have been lobbying for the passage of the RH Bill. At last, for the first time, it has become a priority by the Legislative and Executive Development Council or LEDAC. She stressed that now is the time to continue to support and never cease in advocating and supporting the Bill.
She added that what has to be done is to constantly pore over the provisions of the bill and ensure that its salient provisions are not “dissolved” in the process. “Hindi pa tapos ang ating laban. Hindi pa tapos na na-certify na. Ang hamon po ngayon ay aralin nating mabuti ang nilalaman ng panukalang batas para hindi malusaw ang lalabas na reproductive health bill,” Verzosa said.
A letter of gratitude to President Aquino from the Purple Ribbon Movement was read before the crowd, expressing deep gratitude for the President’s groundbreaking initiative of including the RH Bill in the LEDAC priority measures despite disapprovals and threats from the Catholic Church.
As an immediate response to the gathering in Mendiola, a Palace courier came to claim the letter of gratitude to be given to the President himself.
