In the International Migration Report 2017 of the United Nations, the Philippines ranked 9th among the 20 largest countries or areas of origin of international migrants. It is one of the 11 Asian countries included in the list. Migration can either be permanent or temporary which could be translated to a change in residence or work and its key target has primarily been socio-economic improvement.
According to the 2017 Survey on Overseas Filipinos of the Philippine Statistics Authority, the number of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) was estimated at around 2.3 million — 53.6% of which were women. The Asian continent remained to be the leading destination of women OFWs. Majority of them chose to work in the Western Asia region, specifically in countries like Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain/Israel/Lebanon/Jordan.
