Kasambahay bill OKd in 3rd reading

“We are happy that the Domestic Workers’ Rights or the Kasambahay Bill passed the third reading in the House of Representatives,” Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) Executive Director Emmeline Verzosa said.

The bill is among the priority legislations that the PCW has been working on. Salient points of the Kasambahay bill include recognizing the special vulnerability of household workers to various kinds of abuse, and providing for the use of a formal contract to govern employer-employee relation that clearly identifies the scope of work to be rendered.

Majority of household workers are women and girls.  “The abuses to them remain rampant and hidden and these happen because household work is lowly regarded,” Verzosa said.

Verzosa hopes that the bill will be enacted soon to protect household workers who are “one of the most vulnerable” sectors in the society.
