The Philippine Commission on Women has been recognizing notable efforts on gender and development. Implementing the Gender Justice Awards in 2003 and 2008 highlighted the judiciary’s crucial role in addressing violence against women (VAW). The year-long Search for Outstanding VAW-Responsive Local Government Units from 2008 to 2009 acknowledged the local governments with excellent gender-sensitive VAW initiatives, policies, and programs.

The GADtimpala Trophy

Launched for the first time during the 10th Anniversary of the Magna Carta of Women, the massive piece symbolizes women’s fortitude, dignity, progressiveness, compassion, and grace. It was created by renowned Filipino artist and sculptor Ms. Julie Lluch. She founded the Kababaihan sa Sining at Bagong Sibol ng Kamalayan (KASIBULAN), an organization of women artists in the Philippines.

Made of resin, fiberglass, and marble cast, the trophy is an image of a Filipino woman, the Pearl of the Orient radiating every Filipino woman’s spirit, wisdom, grace, and long history of bravery and valor. Her stance represents woman’s entire quest for empowerment and equality.

This trophy shall be conferred to outstanding government agencies and programs that have successfully pushed gender equality and women’s empowerment in the country.
