Fun-filled GST for Mainit’s leaders and service providers

Mainit’s GST participants gain a gendered understanding of personal life experiences, and affirm individual and collective capacities to become agents of change.

It was a fun- and learning-filled three-day Gender Sensitivity Training (GST) for Mainit municipality’s thirty (30) Local Government Unit (LGU) leaders, civil servants, indigenous leaders, local members of the Philippine Youth Association (or PYA, a DSWD program for the out-of-school youth) and Women and Children Protection Desk Officers (WCPDO).

GST topics included Gender Roles and Socialization, Sexual Division of Labor and Manifestations of Gender Bias (MGB). A favorite session among participants was on personal life experiences, which allowed them to reflect and assess their own attitudes, biases and values. The training concluded with the participants’ expression of commitment to become agents of change by working for gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Held at Dotties in Butuan City, Agusan del Sur from the 22nd – 24th of October 2012, the training forms part of the series of activities planned under the Philippine Commission on Women-Agencia Española de Cooperacion International para el Desarollo (PCW-AECID) project. The project pushes for the localized implementation of the Magna Carta of Women (MCW) in selected LGUs, with a special focus on the promotion of Women’s Human Rights (WHR) and Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE). Last month, the Mainit LGU received PHP 190,500.00 to fund capability-building activities for LGU service providers and community leaders.
