Fair Play: PCW Urges Greater Support for Women in Sports as UAAP Considers Golf

The Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) welcomes the ongoing discussions for the inclusion of golf in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP). This initiative of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), the National Golf Association of the Philippines (NGAP), and the UAAP Board, is a crucial step in bolstering the pathway for aspiring Filipino athletes to raise the Philippine flag in global competitions.

The inclusion of golf in the UAAP is a commendable milestone that can significantly strengthen the local pipeline for our athletes, from grassroots talents to elite players, who may one day proudly represent the Philippines on the world stage.

The Magna Carta of Women (Republic Act No. 9710), upholds every woman’s right to equal treatment and participation across all spheres of life, including sports.  It calls on all institutions to remove barriers and to promote environments that are safe, inclusive, and free from discrimination, harassment, and violence. Thus, the PCW stresses the critical importance of upholding the rights and dignity of every athlete, particularly women and girls.

Access to opportunities and comprehensive support mechanisms to hone talents and skills must never be hindered by biases based on sex, social status, ethnicity, or any other factors.

We hope that the inclusion of golf in the UAAP will be more than just a platform for competition; it must be a powerful symbol of progress and a tangible step towards providing greater, more equitable support for female athletes.

As we embrace this new chapter for golf in collegiate sports, we must also learn from past issues that undermined the dignity and focus of our female athletes. The disheartening issue concerning the golf uniforms of Filipina Olympic golf players in 2024, which sparked unnecessary debate and scrutiny, should serve as a clear reminder and must not be allowed to happen again. Our athletes deserve to compete without unwarranted distractions or judgmental comments about their attire. Focus should always remain on their skill, dedication, and performance.

Thus, we urge all sports institutions to work collaboratively in ensuring that all athletes are protected, respected, fully supported in their training and competition needs, and afforded equal chances to thrive.

We remain a steadfast partner in promoting gender equality and women empowerment in every arena, both on and off the course.
