Best Barangay VAWC Desk Underscore AKLAN’s 18-day Campaign to End VAW


The Aklan Gender and Development Commission chaired by Governor Florencio Miraflores affirms its commitment to end violence against women and children (VAWC) in this province through adherence to activities of the annual 18 day Campaign to End VAW. For the past years, series of activities were organized to raise public awareness on the problem of all forms of VAWC and its elimination. This year’s campaign seeks to address the same with a focus on strengthening mechanisms such as the VAW desk in every barangay.

Executive Order No. 044 S. 2014 signed by Governor Miraflores created the Provincial Inter- agency Monitoring Task Force/ and Assessment Team of the Search of the Best Barangay VAWC Desk in Aklan. The benchmark set for the Search are all enshrined in the Barangay VAW Desk Handbook produced by the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) that was formally launched in the Province of Aklan in 2012.

Governor Miraflores chairs the executive committee and Hon. Lillian Q. Tirol, Sangguniang Panlalawigan chair of the Committee on Women, Children and family is the appointed co-chair. Mr. John Ace Azarcon, DILG Provincial Director, leads the Provincial Evaluation and Assessment Team assisted by Evangelina Gallega, PSWDO and PSSupt Iver Apellido, PNP Provincial Director. Members include Atty. Selwyn Ibarreta, Engr. Roger Esto, PPDC, Dr. Jesse Gomez, DepEd, Hon. Maria Maya Bien Tolentino, Provincial Prosecutor, Dr. Cornelio Cuachon, Hon Stephen Bolivar, President of LIGA-Aklan Chapter and Jones Arrieta, MOVE Aklan President.

Winners of the Search for the Best Barangay VAWC Desk will receive P30,000.00, trophy and Certificate for the 1st place, P20,000 for the second place and P10,000.00 for the 3rd place. Awarding of prizes will be one of the highlights of the 5th Provincial Assembly of the Men Opposed to Violence Against Women Everywhere, Inc. (MOVE) Aklan Chapter on December 12, 2014 at Malinao, Aklan.

MOVE Aklan is an organization of principled Aklanon men who seeks to end VAW by “Speaking out against VAW, Never to condone VAW, and Never to commit VAW”.
