APEC and the Philippines Unleashing the Economic Power of Women through Better Health

865 million women in the world have the potential to contribute more fully to their economies. However, health barriers bar them from entering, remaining and rising in the workforce. In view of this, the Healthy Women, Healthy Economies Policy Toolkit is being launched within the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Women and the Economy 2015 Fora (APEC WE) as part of an initiative to unleash the economic power of women through better health. This year’s APEC host, the Philippines, steps forward and serves as a trailblazer by being APEC’s first-ever economy to pilot the Toolkit.

Join us to learn little-known evidence linking women’s health to their economic participation and for the unveiling of the Toolkit, which presents good practices in one user-friendly place. Hear from the Philippines’ Department of Health about their plans to pilot the Toolkit, the U.S. Ambassador at-Large for Global Women’s Issues on U.S. co-championship of this Toolkit with the Philippines, private sector leaders about their inspiring commitments to support “Healthy Women, Healthy Economies”, and the APEC WE Chair about a “whole of government” approach to women’s health and economic participation as demonstrated by cross-fora collaboration among APEC’s Health Working Group, Human Resource Development Working Group and Policy Partnership on Women and the Economy.

Consistent with the Philippine hosting of APEC 2015 with its theme “Building Inclusive Economies, Building a Better World,” likewise with the APEC WE 2015 theme of “Women as Prime Movers of Inclusive Growth,” this event will open our eyes to the importance of addressing health-related barriers to women’s participation in the economic and social mainstream in order to promote and advance inclusive growth in the Asia-Pacific Region.
